Week 7 Reading Reflection

Questions

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?

I did not appreciate the detailed history and depth of market segmentation.  The article did a great job in tracing the history of how market segmentation has evolved after changes in product innovation and marketing strategies after WWII.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.

I am not a typical student having come back to school after a 20 plus year career in technology and financial services so nothing in this article was confusing for me.  It was actually very intuitive and a great reminder for what the aims of market segmentation should be about.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?

How does the principles of market segmentation apply to non-profits and cause oriented organizations?  This ties into the work I am doing regarding social responsibility and financial services.

What are the best practices about how to conduct the various market segmentation strategies outlined in this article?  Can you point us to examples of other reference materials or firms that are doing it the right way?

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

The author is dead on about this issue, especially as it relates to changing attitudes.  The world is vastly different from the start of the 21st century let alone going back further so changing dynamics are essential.  I don’t disagree with the author at all.
